It all started with Victoria. Victoria wanted to work with us 6 years ago and we made her one of the most beautiful bathrooms ever. That may sound like a small assignment for an architectural firm like ours, but because this bathroom became so special, it turned out to be the start of something bigger. Victoria lives in Amsterdam as an expat and knows many other expats. The fact that we immediately understood her wishes, us being close enough to Amsterdam and offering the 'un-Dutch' service she was used to, turned out to be the basis of a series of other foreign customers and unadulterated word-of-mouth advertising proved its strength. We now regularly have customers from the US, Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine who design their second home here in the Netherlands. Together with us. So, that’s what a ‘simple’ bathroom can lead to. In the last post we told you about one of the most beautiful buildings in the world as far as 70F is concerned: the Therme in Vals, Switzerland. The architect Peter Zumthor, like 70F, also embraces: modernism. Apparent simplicity, technically advanced and uncompromising. No easy solutions such as cover strips, supporting constructions or non-functional additions. Focus is on the essence, on timelessness. You can also see this way of designing in our projects, for example The Sheepstable. Mathematical precision that an average visitor will not see, but will intuitively experience it. The building is right and that is why it feels - for everyone - balanced.

At 70F architecture we value functional minimalism. This week we would like to talk about a building which we find fits the best with our values. That building is Therme Vals in Switzerland, created by Peter Zumthor. This architect shows that Swiss precision manifests itself not only in clockwork, but also in architecture.The Therme, built on a hot spring, has the functionality to relax your body, but thanks to its "groundbreaking", yet seemingly simple construction, it is also a boon for your mind.Zumthor works with the natural stone in one of the most difficult ways. He implements it in an extremely consistent manner, makes no concessions whatsoever, provides natural light in the construction unlike anyone else. He turns this "cave" into a luxurious place to enjoy in peace. Priceless!
